Elvis Presley Mercedes-Benz sells for £80,700

Elvis Presley Mercedes-Benz sells for £80,700 - The King of Rock and Roll had a lifelong fascination for cars - including this elegant powder-blue limousine

A Mercedes-Benz once owned by the 'King of Rock and Roll', Elvis Presley, has changed hands for £80,700.

The powder-blue 1970 600 Saloon Limousine was one of only a handful of cars that the singer registered himself and one of two 600 Mercedes that he owned. The one sold at auction by Bonhams, at Mercedes-Benz World in Surrey was owned by Presley for two years before he handed it to one of his friends, James Leroy Robertson.

It was bought by the current vendor in 2005 from Robertson Motors Memphis, despite the Elvis Presley fan club attempting to "quarantine" the car as they believed it to be an important national treasure that should not be allowed to leave the USA.

According to Bonhams, Presley took delivery of the Mercedes while in the process of rebuilding his career, which had been in the doldrums. The process started with his "Comeback Special" TV show in December 1968, NBC's highest rated show of the season.

Elvis had a lifelong love affair with cars, most famously his pink Cadillac; lesser known was his penchant for Mercedes-Benz 600s, two of which he added to his collection in the 1970s. The car sold by Bonhams was restored to a high standard, and is believed to have been bought by a bidder in Germany.

Other cars sold in the Bonhams auction included a 1955 300 SL "Gullwing" Coupé which changed hands for £441,500 and a 1913 Rolls-Royce 45/59hp Silver Ghost Open Drive Limousine that sold for £419,500. ( telegraph.co.uk )
