Three dead 'after female professor opens fire at University of Alabama' . A woman professor killed three people last night when she opened fire at a university faculty meeting after she was told she would not be getting tenure.

Wearing a pink sweater, the Harvard-trained lecturer reportedly pulled out a gun and started shooting during a meeting of biology staff at the University of Alabama in the United States.

The lecturer, named last night as Dr Amy Bishop, was in custody last night. Three staff members were dead and at least three others were critically injured, said police.

In all, ten people – all staff from the maths and science department – were said to have been wounded.

University spokesman Ray Garner confirmed a woman and a man were both in custody but could not identify them or any of the victims.

Dr Bishop and her husband were said to have been arrested but had not been charged last night.

A campus source confirmed that the shooter was upset because she was told yesterday morning that wasn’t getting tenure in the science department.

Police arrested a woman in the wake of the shooting, which took place this afternoon

Student Erin Johnson said she heard screams coming from the faculty meeting at about 4pm yesterday.

The shooting happened at the Huntsville, Alabama, university’s Shelby Centre. University police secured the maths and science building and students were evacuated.

There are about 7,500 students at the university. The shooting was the latest of a string of school and university shootings in the US in recent years, but the first involving a woman.

University psychology student Justin Wright, 20, said he was working in the maths lab on the second floor when police burst in with guns drawn.

‘My first instinct was, 'I need to get down. I need to get down,' he said. ‘I've never seen a gun or heavy artillery like that. I was shocked.’

Another student, Chris Whitaker, also 20, added:’ I’m completely blown away. I didn’t expect it to happen here. I took a biology class last year, but thank goodness I didn’t take one this year.’

'Everybody’s thoughts and prayers are with the families. The board will stay informed on what has happened and will do what it can to support the university,’ said University of Alabama Board of Trustees President Finis St John. ( dailymail.co.uk )
